The History & Story of George Dery
Where early 20th-century silk nobility meets modern Pennsylvania hospitality in Catasauqua, PA.

George Dery (The Silk King)
Owner of the world's largest silk manufacturing empire in the early 1900s.

The Home of His Dreams
George Dery built the house of his dreams on 520 5th Street in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania. Spanning half a city block, the estate included a 12-car garage, carriage house, formal gardens, and a 24,000-square-foot mansion that cost over $1.7 million at the time of completion—equivalent to over $44 million today.
To George Dery, this was simply his home. But to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, it stood as the largest private residence in the state for many years. Lavish interior features included hand-selected Tiffany stained glass windows, solid marble fireplaces, a private observatory, a basement pool, and an authentic pub lined with Mercer artisan tiles.
The Neoclassical exterior showcases two-story soaring columns, ornate cornices, and multiple grand balconies and terraces overlooking the Lehigh Valley.
Modern Restoration & Preservation
In 2017, New York City restaurateur Herve Rousseau (owner of the famed champagne bar Flute in NYC) purchased the estate as a restoration milestone. Today, the mansion welcomes guests for weddings, romantic stayaways, and private celebrations.
