Historical Timeline
The Mansion
In the early 1900s, Dery began building his mansion at 520 5th Street (with sources citing either 1901 or 1910, and an expansion in 1917). The estate, which included a 12-car garage, carriage house, and garden, spanned half a city block and cost $1.5 million (around $22 million today). Lavish features inside included Tiffany stained glass, marble fireplaces, a pub, an observatory, and a basement pool. The Neoclassical exterior showcased grand two-story columns, pilasters, cornices, and multiple balconies and terraces.
The Decline
Dery went bankrupt in 1923 when silk prices dropped, leading to the closure of his Catasauqua silk mill. A strike in 1934 crippled his remainig businesses, leaving him nearly penniless by his death in 1942. His mansion changed hands multiple times over the years and was eventually divided into apartments.

For his 50th birthday, Rousseau treated himself to a 24,000-square-foot fixer-upper in a town he had never visited before. A Paris native, Rousseau moved to the U.S. at 25 and made his mark as a successful New York City restaurateur, currently owning the champagne bar Flute. As his milestone birthday approached, he sought out a new challenge.
